We all know there are trends, and then there are trends.
The ones that reappear time and time again, or never leave the scene in the first place.
And then those that end up in landfill by the end of the season, never to reappear again.
We’d all agree, the first sort is the best sort.
And that’s exactly what Mary Jane shoes offer.
With a history dating back to 1904 (and yes, that's 119 years of history!), the reemergence of Mary Janes shouldn’t surprise us.
They're a style that keep on giving.
Created by the Brown Shoe Company in Missouri they were originally known as bar shoes, but were later renamed after the mischievous
carton character, Mary Jane.
This character was created by Richard Felton Outcault in his comic strip Buster Brown and was based on his daughter, Mary Jane, who wore
little black shoes with a strap across the instep.
Now, in 2024 Mary Janes continue to be a fashion favourite (although really, the never stop being present on the fashion scene).
I’ve found styles from Chanel to Arket, Dior to Aeyde, plus plenty of pre-loved options by luxury labels and more affordable brands.
There are so many variations to this originally simple style.

Thanks so much for visiting, Isabella! And glad you found some you liked. The Jonak ones are lovely. As are the pair by The Row but yes, definitely not low budget!
